Structural Engineer (Marine)

  Central Malta  |  €35,000 - €40,000 Annually 

We are seeking a Structural Engineer to join our client's marine engineering team in Malta, supporting ship repair, refit, and conversion projects. The role involves designing, assessing, and maintaining the structural integrity of vessels while ensuring compliance with international classification rules and Maltese safety and labour legislation. This is a hands-on role requiring both office-based design work and on-site inspections at shipyards and docks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, design, and review structural components of vessels, including hulls, decks, bulkheads, and superstructures.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings, structural calculations, and reports for repairs, refits, and conversions.
  • Conduct on-site inspections and surveys to verify structural integrity and compliance with safety standards.
  • Work closely with naval architects, project managers, and shipyard teams to implement practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Ensure adherence to international classification society rules (Lloyd’s, DNV, ABS) and Maltese occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Evaluate materials, welding methods, and structural repairs to maintain durability and longevity of vessels.
  • Support tendering and quotation processes by providing structural assessments and feasibility studies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all projects, including compliance with Maltese and EU legal requirements.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to junior engineers, technicians, and workshop staff.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be already in Malta, with the legal right to work in Malta
  • Strong understanding of material behavior, marine steels, and fatigue considerations.
  • Excellent technical reporting, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • bility to work on-site in shipyards, docks, and vessels, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with Maltese legislation regarding workplace safety, marine operations, and construction standards.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.
  • Professional certification or warrant preferred (or in progress).
  • Proven experience in structural engineering; marine or shipyard experience highly advantageous.
  • Competence with structural analysis software (e.g., FEA) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Experience with vessel conversions, refits, or life-extension projects is an asset
