Lead Mechanical Fitter

  South of Malta

We are seeking a highly experienced Lead Mechanical Fitter to oversee the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of shipboard mechanical systems. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in machining, precision engineering, and safety compliance, with the ability to lead a team and ensure high-quality work in marine environments.

Responsibilities:

1. Mechanical Overhaul & Maintenance

  • Lead complete engine overhauls, including disassembly, inspection, reassembly, and calibration.
  • Conduct turbocharger maintenance, balancing, and performance testing.
  • Supervise repairs of winches, mooring station components, and deck machinery.
  • Overhaul and repair hydraulic cylinders, ensuring correct pressure and sealing.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of rotary equipment such as pumps, compressors, and blowers.

2. Machining & Precision Engineering

  • Understand and apply machining principles for component repair and fabrication.
  • Work with lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and CNC machines for part modifications.
  • Perform shaft alignment, gear cutting, and keyway machining when necessary.
  • Ensure proper tolerance measurement and precision fitting using callipers, micrometres, and dial indicators.
  • Verify welding and metalworking processes align with marine standards.

3. Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead and mentor a team of marine mechanics, machinists, and technicians.
  • Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Maintain high technical discipline and ensure compliance with engineering standards.

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain records of repairs, component conditions, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Generate technical reports on failures, repairs, and recommended improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with class survey requirements and inspections.

Requirements:

  • Strong hands-on knowledge of diesel and gas engines, turbochargers, and mechanical systems.
  • Expertise in precision machining (lathe, milling, grinding, CNC operation).
  • Proficiency in hydraulic and pneumatic systems troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with welding, brazing, and structural metal fabrication.
  • Knowledge of IMO, SOLAS, and MARPOL regulations.
  • Strong team management and mentoring abilities.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to make fast decisions.
