Accountant

Our client within the insurance industry is looking to recruit an Accountant to join their team.This is a standalone role with the flexibility of remote working. However, occasional office visits (approximately twice a month) are required when the Directors are in Malta.

Main responsibilities include :

• Handle daily accounting tasks including invoicing, payments, and financial records
• Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements and regulatory reports (MFSA, CBM)
• Maintain accounting policies and support local GAAP audits
• Liaise with auditors, tax advisors, and outsourced payroll/corporate services
• Oversee bank relations and prepare weekly payment runs
• Manage monthly VAT, annual tax returns, and compliance checklists
• Review and improve accounting processes and systems
• Prepare and review client (reinsurance captive) accounts and regulatory filings
• Record premiums, claims, expenses, and monitor currency movements
• Submit QRTs and statistics to MFSA/CBM, and confirm submissions
• Support internal audits, board reporting, and client financial requests
• Attend client and tax advisor meetings

Requirements

• Strong knowledge of local GAAP and GAPEE
• Experience with accounting standards for insurance and reinsurance companies
• Familiarity with Sage accounting software is an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a professional and clear style
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
• The appointment requires prior MFSA approval, as the position is designated a Key Person role under the “PQ process.”

Education and Experience

• Fully qualified accountant, ideally holding a warrant and a Master’s degree
• Minimum of 5 years’ local experience in a similar role within financial services (e.g. insurance manager, insurer, or reinsurer)
